As the title would suggest, 'The Best of OMD' covers the band's greatest hits- from their very first single 'Electricity', released in 1979, to their 1988 single, 'Dreaming'.
Despite the fact that the band had only been releasing music for about nine years at the time of the album's release, it contains a great deal of material. From the simple sombreness of worldwide hit 'Enola Gay' to the pure pop of the USA Billboard No. 4 hit 'If You Leave', and from the rhythmic drama of 'Joan of Arc (Maid of Orleans)' to the schoolboyish sweetness of 'Talking Loud and Clear', the range of music on this album is phenomenal.
Further songs added to the later CD version include the 12" version of 1986 single 'We Love You'- six minutes of uninhibited, disco-worthy rock/pop; its completely unlike OMD, but works all the same.
The one track that feels as if it is missing from here, however, is 'Red Frame/White Light'- OMD's second single from their eponymously-titled first album. Although it only reached no. 67 on the UK singles chart, it was very popular- particularly among local fans, as the track is about the telephone box in Meols from where various band members would organise their gigs and transportation- at the band's concerts, and provides extra insight into the Kraftwerk-inspired music the band were writing when they first started out.
Later 'greatest hits' compilations include mastered versions of all these tracks, and a CD and DVD double disc set (with all of the group's known music videos on the latter).
